Hollywood director Steven Spielberg has spoken out in defence of the NBC musical drama Smash, despite the show being heavily criticised for its first season. Steven was one of the people responsible for bringing the show to television screens and is still an executive producer on Smash.

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Spielberg explained, “Here's what's great about Smash - it's not a procedural, it's not medical, it's not cops, it's not legal eagles, it isn't a sitcom. So it does defy what is commercial and popular today.”

He added, “But that's what [NBC Entertainment chairman] Bob Greenblatt wanted to do when he came in and was offered NBC. He wanted to take his cable sensibility and bring it to network television and I think he's succeeding admirably.”

Steven Spielberg did admit that he would take the necessary actions to bring the ratings for Smash back up and has already removed negative characters, such as Ellis (Jaime Cepero). Smash has also added Jennifer Hudson to the cast and is set to return for Season two on February 5 on NBC. Smash is also set to air in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
