There has been a lot of talk about it being 10 years since Maria Sharapova won her one and only Wimbledon title and, following the exit of world number 1 Serena Williams, a lot of people tipped her to finally win a second. Unfortunately that will not be the case this year and the wait for that second Wimbledon title goes on for another year at least.
Maria Sharapova was hoping for another Wimbledon title

Maria Sharapova walked on to centre court for her fourth round match against Angelique Kerber, knowing that Angelique had not been past the fourth round at a Grand Slam in over two years. Kerber was also well aware of that fact and she has admitted that she tried to just take each point as it came, which eventually worked out with a 7-6 4-6 6-4 win.

Kerber explained, "I had it before the match in my mind that in the past few Grand Slams I lost in the fourth round, but in this match I was just trying to focus point-by-point and it was a great match. I think people enjoyed it out there - it was great to play on Centre Court, just an amazing atmosphere out there."

She added, "When I had those three match points in a row [she led 0-40 in the final game] and then it was deuce, I just had to focus myself and tell myself 'believe in yourself'. I just had to be aggressive and in the end it worked."

Angelique Kerber will now play Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter finals, with Bouchard beating her at the French Open in Paris back in May. It should make for one great match.
