You really do have to feel for a lot of the top tennis players who have been around for the past few years, as they have barely been given a sniff of winning the big tournaments, thanks to the dominance of the world number one Serena Williams. A lot of these players would have shared a number of tournament wins in any other era but have had to watch as Serena continues to prove her greatness.
One of the players who has really felt the full force of Serena Williams over the years, is the talented Maria Sharapova, who has come up short against the American great on many occasions in her career. In fact, 34-year-old Serena Williams has beaten Maria Sharapova in every one of their past 18 meetings, stretching her unbeaten record over the 28-year-old to an incredible 12 years, thanks to her win at the Australian Open.
Serena Williams made fairly light work of Maria Sharapova in their Australian Open quarter-final, beating her rival 6-4 6-1 and setting up a semi final match with Agnieska Radwanska. Maria must be wondering just how many more titles she may have won over the years, if it was not for the pure class and sheer dominance of Serena over the past few years.
As the age of 34, Serena Williams is not getting any younger but she is also not showing any signs of slowing down either. Maria Sharapova would surely have been hoping that Serena would be looking towards retiring soon, so that she could try to get her hands on a few more titles before her own career comes to an end. Unfortunately though, it looks like we could see Serena Williams dominating women's tennis for a few more years to come. Sorry Maria.
