Craig Robinson wrapped up a years-long stint on the Office, but he'll be back on television soon enough with his new comedy show. The untitled series was finally picked up for six episodes by NBC, and after being initially mentioned as a possible show in 2012.
Based on the synopsis, Craig will star as, "a talented musician with rough edges, who adjusts to his new life as a music teacher in a big-city middle school, where he encounters teacher politics and the temptations of single moms."
The series will also star Larenz Tate and Amandla Stenberg in supporting roles, with Larenz starring as Craig's brother and partner in their band. Amandla will play a one of the students who plays an integral role on the show, and who Craig's character develops a close bond with.
Right now, there's no air date set for the show, although a six episode order definitely shows that NBC has confidence in the show. Also, this series [still untitled] definitely has more of a dramatic edge to it than The Office, which should allow Craig and Larenz to stretch their dramatic muscles more. Well, Larenz Tate probably doesn't need to stretch his dramatic muscles, considering his experience in shows such as House of Lies and Rescue Me, as well as movies like Ray and Crash. Tate has been working for a very long time, but it's only recently that he's becoming more of a name actor. Let's hope that this show becomes a hit, and both Amandla and Larenz become household names.
