When it comes to movie villains, there have not been many over the years who could compare to the DC villain The Joker, who has been portrayed by some of the greatest actors at the peak of their careers. So, when it was announced that The Joker would be making a return to the big screen in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, there were plenty of suggestions as to who should play the role, before it was officially confirmed that Jared Leto has been cast as the Clown Prince of Crime, but how will his performance compare to those who have come before him?
Way back in 1989, we saw the legendary actor Jack Nicholson taking on the role of The Joker in the Tim Burton movie Batman, giving us a very interesting take on the character. The Jack Nicholson version of The Joker was a rather camp one but still managed to give the evil, sadistic side of the character. Then in 2008 we got the Heath Ledger version of The Joker in the Christopher Nolan movie The Dark Knight, giving us one of the best performances of his career in the role, stealing the show and bagging himself an Oscar along the way.
While both of these performances were very different in a lot of ways, they were still both very impressive performances, proving rather successful and showing that The Joker is a very popular character among the fans. It is fair to say that Jared Leto is going to have his work cut out to improve on what we got from Heath Ledger and the best thing that they could do with the character, is to make it as different a version from The Dark Knight character as possible, so not to draw too many comparisons with it.
The Suicide Squad movie is set to hit the big screen on August 5, 2016 and we cannot wait to see what Jared Leto brings to the role.
Do you think Jared Leto will make a good Joker?
