There was once a time when you could pretty much guarantee that a movie was going to become a huge success, simply by casting Hollywood superstar Will Smith in a role, with the actor having a string of hugely successful movies to his name. However, as is always the way with actors in Hollywood, Will saw his shining star beginning to fade and signed on to appear in a number of movies which really missed the mark.
Not only was Will Smith signing on to appear in average movies, he was also starting to receive a lot of criticism for his performances, with many people beginning to feel that he could only play the same character in his films. So, when it was announced that Will Smith had been cast to play the role of the Genie in the live action adaptation of the classic Disney movie Aladdin, it was interesting to see how the fans would respond.
Well, there are obviously still those big Will Smith fans who feel that the actor would be perfect for the role of the Genie, although it seems that the majority of fans are not quite convinced that he is the right man for the role. It will be interesting to see if they use motion capture for the character or if they go down some other CGI route, or if they just have Will Smith simply appearing as the Genie himself.
With that said, it seems that Will Smith as the Genie is not the biggest downside to the Aladdin movie, as pretty much everyone is worried about the fact that Guy Ritchie is directing the project. After all, Guy seems to struggle to impressive with his directing talents unless it is a British gangster style movie, so we are intrigued to see how he will approach Aladdin.
Aladdin is set to hit the big screen on May 24, 2019.
