Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire are to headline Glastonbury 2014 it has been confirmed by the band. The band used Twitter to make the official announcement posting the words "Next year, one week in June" with a picture confirming that they will play Glastonbury on 27th June 2014 - which is the Friday, the first of three full days of the festival.

While that tweet did not confirm that the Montreal based band would headline - just that they would play, a follow up statement from Glastonbury did confirm that they would headline the Friday night - stating "We're very pleased to announce that Arcade Fire will headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2014, on Friday 27th June".

Arcade Fire last played the legendary festival in 2007 where they headlined the 'Other Stage' so this is a step up for the, to headline the main stage of the festival. But having released their extremely successful recent fourth album 'Reflektor' which went to number one in the UK album charts they clearly have the popularity to pull of the slot.

Their choice as headliners seems to go against organizer Michael Eavis' claim that all three Glastonbury headliners for 2014 would be "Glastonbury virgins", but they are a popular, relevant band that will no doubt be a huge success headlining the first night of the festival.
