Clancy's works were well-known for his meticulous research, and his thrilling books that focused on military technology and tactics with plots often revolving around political intrigue. He rose to fame in the 1990's, becoming one of only three authors in history to have sold more than two million copies on a first printing. In 2002 Forbes magazine said of the author:

"Clancy can produce a guaranteed bestseller just by writing two words: his name."

Many of Tom Clancy's books became movies, but his work also provided great inspiration to the video games industry. Games such as the Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell series have been wildly popular with fans.

The New York Times reports that Clancy's publisher has confirmed that the author died sometime last night at a Baltimore hospital, though they listed no cause of death yet.

The author recently finished writing his most recent novel, "Command Authority," which focuses on a dark political secret in Russia, and President Jack Ryan's solution to the political mystery. The book is available for preorder and will release December 3.
